Hiking tour "In the footsteps of Friedrich Harkort"

Circular route:

Route description:

Starting point of our hiking tour is the town hall built in 1909 with the statue of the Freiherr vom und zum Stein (1757 – 1831). After a few meters in a north-easterly direction, the path leads us to the historic district Freiheit ( Freiheit) with former burghers' houses, picturesque half-timbered squares (five-gabled corner) and the former dwelling-houses of the Freiherr vom und zum Stein and Friedrich Harkort. Further information can be found on the table of contents in front of the reformed church.

The church was built on the walls of the former castle chapel and was consecrated in 1894 (ascent of the tower is possible by arrangement). To the right of the church is the house of Harkort, a timbered house built around 1700 with slate roofing, which was owned by the entrepreneur family Harkort. To the left of the church is the. castle ruin of Wetter. In 1819 Friedrich Harkort established his "Mechanical Workshop". Until 1960, metal processing companies were located in the Freiheit. From the "Türmchen" to the left of the office building ruin, we have a round view of the Harkortsee, the Cuno power plant, the railway viaduct and the Kaisberg with the moated castle of Werdringen in front.

The route continues through the city via  Harkortstraße to the Park der Ruhe, the extensive graveyard created at the beginning of the 20th century Down to the  Schnodderbach, which marks the city boundary to Herdecke, and again uphill to the  Gut Schede, a noble residence and today's farm, which dates back to the ninth century and is also called the house of Schede. From 1748 the family of industrialist Peter Harkort lived here, who helped shape the start of iron and steel production in the Ruhr area with the construction of a crude steel hammer in Wetter as part of industrialization. Friedrich Harkort, who died in 1880, was buried in the forest of Gut Schede in the nearby Harkort hereditary burial ground.

Through the forest of the Ardey mountains we finally reach the Harkortberg with sports field and the Harkortturm built in 1884. From here, as well as from the viewpoint that was created at the beginning of 2008 at the edge of the forest about 170 meters away, we have a wonderful view over the Harkortsee, the town of Herdecke and the Kaisberg.

The  Sunderweg leads us downhill back to the Freiheit and our starting point, the  parking spot in front of the town hall.

If you have left some time and pleasure, you are cordially invited to a cozy detour to the restaurant Friedrich am See ( Friedrich am See). In addition to the shipyard on the Seeplatz, a steam engine swinging wheel from the former Harkort-Eicken steelworks was set up as an industrial monument until 2009. This was later transferred to the industrial park Schöntal.
