Wetter (Ruhr) is part of the ExtraSchicht on June 29th

Jens Holsteg, Town of Wetter (Ruhr)

"We are very happy that we in Wetter are a part of this ExtraSchicht which has been very popular with the citizens of all North Rhine-Westphalia for years."

Mayor Frank Hasenberg

On Saturday, June 29, the "Freiheit" in Alt-Wetter is one of 50 venues of the ExtraSchicht – Night of Industrial Culture in the Ruhr Area.

The city of Wetter (Ruhr) had applied together with Demag at the organizing Ruhr tourism GmbH for being a part of the ExtraSchicht. On Saturday, June 29, between 18 and 2 clock Wetter is now a location of the Extraschicht, but with two locations: on the one hand around the castle ruins in the Freiheit, where Friedrich Harkort founded his mechanical workshop in 1819, on the other hand in the distribution center of the Demag. The world company Demag emerged from the mechanical workshop.

The two venues are connected by a lit historical path.

"Friedrich Harkort is a formative figure for our city. His Mechanical Workshop in the Freiheit was the nucleus of industrialization in Westphalia. It is nice that we can now celebrate this important anniversary for our city together with numerous visitors as part of the successful and popular ExtraSchicht event series."
Mayor Frank Hasenberg

Additional Information

Mechanical Workshop Wetter
Admission: VVK: 17 € / reduced 14 € / box office: 20 € / venue tickets: 12 €

In the Castle of Wetter (built in the 13th century) Friedrich Harkort founded the "Mechanical Workshop Harkort & Co." in 1819. As one of the first machine factories in the Ruhr area and in Germany, it has great significance both in industrial history and for regional development. Today, the ruin is a destination. The "Mechanical Workshop Harkort & Co." was the forerunner of one of today's largest employers in Wetter, the Demag.

Past and Present

Even if the ruins of the castle can no longer be supposed to be a cradle of industrialization: the spirit of the past floats above it and is made visible again today. And just a short walk away, the Demag opens to ExtraSchicht your distribution center. In the high-bay warehouse modern logistics processes are artistically processed.

Castle ruins

The terrain of the castle ruin is set in scene by light effects. The history of the mechanical workshop and its significance for the development of the Ruhr area is taken up at different stations and with different art forms. The person of Friedrich Harkort should also speak. Take a walk through the grounds around the castle ruins to get historical-political information and experience artistic discussions with the subject. To enjoy and linger, various food trucks with delicacies, blankets in a meadow and a wonderful view of the "Harkortsee" and the Ruhr Valley invite.

In the high-bay warehouse, a spectacular sound and light choreography takes place every half hour, providing insights into the logistics processes at Demag. Attention: Participation only possible with shoes with firm soles. Also here food is provided.

The castle ruins in the "Freiheit" and the Demag grounds are not only connected by extra-layer shuttle buses, but also by a historic trail that tracks industrial and corporate milestones on a 15-minute walk.
