The first churches and monasteries in today's Westphalia developed in this conflict-rich border area on the Middle Ruhr at the time when the Carolingian king Karl forcibly integrated the pagan Saxons into his empire and proselytised them to Christianity.

The changing history of the County of Mark, its attempts to gain power against the sovereign rights of the archbishops of Cologne, the reformation, the counter-reformation, the great wars up to the twentieth century with destruction, famine, pestilence and decimation of the population, but also industrialization from the 19th century onwards are important events which have markedly shaped the life and work of this local cultural landscape. In the process, the churches document the temporal spirit and the beliefs in changing their forms and artistic design.

These churches are also to be regarded as cultural monuments in their church-historical, architectural and art-historical significance. They open up only when they are also understood in their historically evolved identity.

Our guided church tours build on these historical traditions without, however, losing sight of the church architecture, the functionality, the remarkable interior decorations and specific curiosities. The history of the place and the parish as well as occasional anecdotes are in no way to be missed.

Depending on the time and interest, the churches can be chosen individually or in groups. Here, especially in the case of closed group tours, we naturally take into account your wishes in the arrangement.
